Sadness vs Depression
Let's understand the difference between both.
Everyone experiences sadness in one situation or another, which is a normal human emotion. When we are hurt or disappointed, our typical reaction is sadness. Different levels of melancholy exist. But, like other emotions, sadness also is short-lived and this is what it makes it different from Depression.
When we talk about Depression, we should understand that it is a clinical disorder not an emotion. It hampers socio-occupational functioning of an individual. It is important to treat depressive symptoms as they can last for a very long time if left unaddressed and can cause severe harm. It is more than "just a phase" and will not go away on its own. There are proper psychological assessments for depression following psychological and pharmacological treatments. Therefore, it becomes important to seek professional help in order to get proper diagnose and treatment.
One thing is for sure, sadness can be a part of depression but depression cannot be a part of sadness. Since we are talking about sadness, we should know low mood, crying spells which are seen in sadness are also symptoms of depression. Now, Let's understand the symptoms of depression which differentiates it from sadness. These symptoms includes anhedonia (loss of interest in activities which we tend to enjoy before), guilt feelings, insomnia or hypersomnia (inability to sleep or excessive sleep), hopelessness for future, worthlessness, irritability, aggression, reduced appetite, anxiety, significant changes in weight, death wishes, suicidal thoughts or even suicidal attempts.
When one should seek help?
If someone is experiencing above-mentioned symptoms from past two weeks or more, than it is time to seek help. Call emergency services to receive prompt medical care if you are considering suicide or have already started to do so (KIRAN- Govt of India: 1800-599-0019; NIMHANS: 080-46110007; AASRA: 09820466726). A practical initial step towards recovery can include talking to a mental health professional such as a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist.
Changing your way of life could help you feel better if you’re depressed. But these modifications might not be sufficient. Psychological therapies such as CBT, REBT can help with depression and DBT with self harm tendencies but the therapist might not stick to these therapies only as eclectic approach helps promotes flexibility to the client and therapist as well. Psychological therapy with a qualified practitioner you trust and a pharmaceutical prescription from a psychiatrist can help if you’re depressed. By connecting to a hospital, you can receive inpatient care if you’re suicidal or have any self-harm ideas.
Please note that this post is for educational purpose only. Please do not indulge in self diagnose, it is always a good idea to talk to an expert to understand your problems because there are many symptoms which might overlap with other disorders or some secondary problem. So do not hesitate to consult to a professional who might be able to clarify your doubts better. Also, if you know someone who might need help, please encourage them to seek help.
